We are Hiring!

Grow Portland is excited to announce that we are inviting applications to hire 3 new Garden Educators. We welcome applications from candidates with a passion for school garden education. Grow Portland encourages applicants with diverse life, work, and educational experiences to apply. For more information and to apply, check out the posting on our website.

Garden Spotlight: Ventura Park

Grow Portland launched a pilot Garden School program at Ventura Park Elementary (DDSD) in the Fall of 2018. In June 2019 we concluded a successful year of programming, and we are excited to continue this partnership in 2019-20.

We are grateful for the warm welcome and support we received from Principal Holly Schauer and VP teachers, who modeled enthusiasm and engagement for their students in the garden. A special thanks to PTO co-presidents Shannon Squire and Daniela Pucher for their incredible feats of shoveling as we got the garden cleaned up and ready to plant! Thanks to a generous donation from the David Douglas Community Transitions Program, we’ve got a variety of warm-weather crops planted, and we look forward to welcoming students back in the fall with a bountiful harvest!

Summer Volunteer Opportunities With Grow Portland

We are happy to be hosting a series of volunteer workdays this summer. Our gardens require a lot of maintenance to be beautiful for Back-To-School in August. One of the best times to volunteer to help out is on Saturday, August 24th–PPSCommunity Cares Day. If you are interested in helping us with watering or maintenance at our garden sites, or in organizing a volunteer group to participate on Community Cares Day, please contact our Program Coordinator Jennie Marable (jmarable@growportland.org) for more information.

Collaborating To Strengthen Outdoor Ed

Grow Portland was pleased to participate in Growing Gardens School Garden Coordinator Certificate Training. Our Education Director, Djamila Moore, hosted 2019 participants at our Harrison Park Garden (PPS) to talk about how to support garden education in schools. She and our Program Coordinator, Jennie Marable, are graduates of this program, and enjoy sharing their experiences navigating the creative, challenging, and rewarding work of providing school garden education. We are so happy to support this valuable program, and wish the 2019 class the best in getting their gardens growing!
